Dogs poisoned before burglary
Clubview family broken after their four dogs are all poisoned in one night.
Four Yorkshire terriers were poisoned in a Clubview complex on Sunday, apparently by a thief intent on robbing their neighbour.
This happened late at night and all four animals had died by 04:00.
About 15 minutes later, a thief scaled the walls of the complex and crossed into the neighbours’ home, where he stole a braai, lights, and some linen.
The owners of the dogs, who asked not to be named for safety reasons, said the dogs were all poisoned with Aldicarb.
Aldicarb, which has been dubbed Two-Step, is sold as Temik.
Tshwane SPCA spokesperson Korky Levanon said Temik was not available to the public.
“Only registered farmers can purchase it. The problem is that the poison gets stolen from farmers, and used to poison dogs. The poison is easily purchased at any taxi rank.”
The dog owners said their little daughter would not stop crying.
“The complex has never had any issues with crime. Now, in the past six months, we have seen a serious spike in crime. My neighbour across from me has also been targeted,” they said.
“Just a few nights ago his window was shattered by someone who threw a stone. His devil’s fork was also bent away from the wall, without someone ever breaking in. We fear whoever is breaking in might strike again.”
The Aldicarb used to poison the family’s Yorkies was stuffed in a bread stick.
“The most common way the poison is fed to dogs is by putting it in Vienna sausages. The poison resembles gun powder, and is highly poisonous,” says Levanon.
“All it takes is ingesting less than half a teaspoon of Two-Step and any animal or toddler is more than likely to die a horrible, painful death with the nervous system being affected and death by asphyxiation.”
The family said the dogs all started acting erratic before struggling to walk and falling down. They had difficulty breathing and died shortly afterwards.
The family was now reconsidering their decision to buy the house they were renting.
“We just don’t want other people and dogs to fall victim as well.”
Recently, two dogs, a German shepherd and a Yorkshire terrier were poisoned in Kloofsig.
Valhalla also recently fell victim to a spate of dog poisoning, with nine poisoned over a two month period.
