Police fight domestic violence
If you think you might be a victim of domestic violence, look out for the following red flags.
The Villieria police recently received training in the treatment of domestic violence and the protection of children’s rights.
Villieria police station social worker Captain Estelle van Rooyen helped educate and sensitise the officers to handle these cases professionally, yet sensitively.
Lieutenant-Colonel Silas Thoka, of Villieria police, said the police were also victims of or have been affected by domestic violence.
Villieria police spokesperson Captain Brits said it was important to recognise domestic violence.
“Domestic violence, also called domestic abuse, battery or intimate-partner violence, occurs between people in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence can take many form, including emotional, sexual and physical abuse.”
The police gave the following tips to fight domestic violence:
– Recognise situations or events that are likely to escalate into violence.
– If you can’t control your anger, get away. Take a time out.
– Think about the options and consequences of your actions.
– If necessary, get help from a third party to solve differences.
– Be willing to admit and be responsible for something you may have done wrong.
– Respond with your head, not your fists, threats or weapons
