Police warn of sudden spike in bicycle theft

Spate of thefts around the city trigger police to issue warning.

There has been a sudden and unexpected rise in bicycle thefts in Centurion, police warned.

Lyttelton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the most recent theft happened on Tuesday morning, when a man was caught red-handed with a stolen bicycle outside the Wingate park estate.

“The owners of the house were asleep, but woke up when they heard a noise around 03:00,” Gumbu said.

“They heard another noise at 03:45, and pressed the panic button to Bull Security. A police patrol cars that was in the area rushed to the scene as well.”

On the way, police in a patrol car spotted a man walking down the road with a bicycle. They questioned him and called Bull Security who put them in touch with the owners of the house who confirmed they had a similar bicycle and that their’s was missing.

The man was arrested and charged with home burglary and possession of stolen property.

Gumbu said the latest robbery follows several in Lyttelton and a spate of attacks at Fort Klapperkop and Groenkloof nature reserves.

“We urge everyone to be careful. Don’t travel alone at Fort Klapperkop or in the street with a bicycle.”
