Residents rebuild their shacks

Tshwane metro demolished more than 3 000 shacks in Pienaarspoort.

Land invaders continued to reconstruct their shacks after the Tshwane metro destroyed them a few weeks ago at Retshwenyegile. The land invaders said they were not going anywhere.

This follows after the metro and more than 15 trucks packed with the Red Ants started demolishing the land invaders’ shacks on 26 April.

They demolished more than 3 500 shacks.

The land invaders said they could not afford to pay rent and were tired of living with their parents.

They also complained that they had been on the RDP waiting list for years, but nothing has been done for them.

Community leader Martin Matlala said, “We have taken the matter to court and we are still waiting for the outcome.”

The clash between the Tshwane metro and the residents of Retshwenyegile on 26 April ended with people being shot with rubber bullets. Residents reacted by throwing stones at the metro police and officials of a private security company.

Many people were seriously injured, including Thapelo Basson, a home owner in Extension 18 who was not part of the protest. He was hit with a rubber bullet at close range and had to get it removed at the hospital.

Many of the residents complained their furniture was damaged and now they had nowhere to go.

The residents vowed not to go anywhere.

“All we want is water and electricity,” they said.
