School robbed of thousands in electronics
A Centurion primary school was burgled of electronics. The principal has warned other schools to be on the lookout.
A Centurion primary school was recently robbed of nearly R800 000 worth of electronics, including new tablets, computers and audiovisual equipment.
The principal, who asked to remain anonymous, said the burglary happened just after 23:00 on 19 May.
“Nobody was at the school at the time. I only found out early the next morning,” said the principal.
According to the principal, the burglars broke into the office through the ceiling.
They managed to deactivate the alarm system before ransacking the office and stealing all the electronics, cash and valuables they could get their hands on.
The tablets were bought with the school’s own money.
The principal said it was unclear how the burglars knew how to disable the alarm system or where everything was, but suspects they scoped out the school beforehand.
He warned other schools to be on the lookout.
“Just a month ago, a principal of a nearby high school, and a close friend of mine, was brutally attacked and nearly killed while working late at school,” he said.
“I also heard of eight schools in Randburg that were robbed, as well as a school in Olievenhoutbosch.
“We may have been the most recent target, but other schools need to know that schools are being targeted by burglars. We cannot be soft targets.”
He urged all schools to improve their security.
CCTV footage has been handed over to the police and they are investigating.
