Sport highlights, 3 – 5 June
Although there is not much local sports action to look forward to this weekend, both the Proteas and Bafana Bafana will be in action.
June is the month for international sport with the first action for cricket, football and rugby fans this week.
Cricket
With the Indian Premier League now something of the past, cricket lovers shift their attention to the Caribbean for the West Indies Tri-Series.
The Proteas and the West Indies will meet in the first game at the Providence Stadium, Guyana. The game starts at 19:00 (SA time) on Friday 3 June.
On Sunday (5 June) it is Australia’s turn to play the home team. This game will also start at 19:00.
Rugby
With the SupeRugby tournament taking a break for a few weeks, rugby fans can look forward to international action in June.
Apart from the test series against Ireland, South Africans can also look forward to the SA A-team’s two-game series against the English Saxons (England A). Unfortunately, both these series only start next week.
The only big rugby action this weekend will therefore be in the Currie Cup tournament. The Blue Bulls travel to Welkom for a game against the Griffons on Saturday. The game starts at 15:00.
Locally, rugby fans can support club rugby by attending games in the Carlton Cup league. All games are supposed to start at 16:00 on Saturday.
This weekend, Naka Bulls play at home against Tuks, Impala will meet Centurion in Centurion and Harlequins will host the new club in the league, Dragons.
* The World Rugby u.20 championships also starts next week in Manchester, England. The first games are on 7 June and the Junior Boks will play against Japan on that day.
Athletics
While most of the Comrades athletes will probably still be recovering, there are athletes who will face the early morning chill of Pretoria on Saturday for the Silver Lakes Race of Faith.
The race will start at Pebble Beach Drive in the Silver Lakes Golf Estate.
Runners can do a 15km route, a 10km route or a 5km fun run.

Football
June is also a month for international football and South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, will meet Gambia at the Independence Stadium in Bacau in a Group M encounter for their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.
Tennis
The French Open tennis tournament, which was constantly interrupted by rain, is supposed to end this weekend.
If they can manage to catch up with all the lost playing time, the new men’s and women’s champions will be crowned this weekend.
