Take caution when meeting strangers
Police provide safety tips when meeting potential clients or strangers away from the office environment.
Following a series of murders in Krugersdorp, police have warned locals to be careful when meeting strangers or potential clients away from the office environment.
This week the body of Hanle Lategan was identified. The 52-year-old estate agent went missing in Krugersdorp and was found dead a day later in Elandsvlei.
Last month Krugersdorp News also reported on the murders of Kevin McAlpine (29) and Anthony Scholefield (64) – both insurance brokers.
McAlpine was found in the boot of his silver BMW on 26 May, while Scholefield was found in the boot of a car on the evening of 10 May.
Both had had appointments with potential clients just hours before they were discovered, covered in plastic bags.
“Police believe the modi operandi for both McAlpine and Scholefield’s murders are the same,” wrote Krugersdorp News.
Pretoria residents are also warned to be wary when meeting people, whether it is work-related or a private appointment, at unknown or secluded locations.
“One can never be too careful when meeting with strangers or even clients outside the workplace,” said Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.
“For some people, like estate agents or journalists, it is sometimes unavoidable to meet people after hours or at unknown locations.”
He gave the following tips to keep in mind when meeting strangers or potential clients:
“Leave a cheap cellphone in the boot and always keep pepper spray at hand when driving. It might sound extreme, but in an emergency situation it might just save your life,” said Van Dyk.
“If you are going to a client’s house or to a private location, take someone with you. Or call someone to tell them where you are going and let them know when you get there.”
