Man nabbed with detonators, explosives
“One of these explosives can cause an entire floor of an average sized building to collapse when detonated.”
A man was arrested on Thursday afternoon, for possession of a large amount of explosives and detonators.
The 51-year-old from Tembisa was spotted carrying a large red and white shopping bag following a tip-off from the public.
The man was arrested in Burgers Park on the corner of Lilian Ngoyi and Minaar streets.
Police found 30 commercial explosives and 29 detonators in the bag.
Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said one of these explosives could collapse an entire floor of an average sized building when detonated.
“A smaller calibre of this type of commercial explosives are generally used for criminal activities such as blowing up safes and ATMs.”
She said the investigation into how the explosives were obtained and their intended use was ongoing.
She encouraged the community to get involved in the fight against crime as this success could not have been possible otherwise.
“Members of the community are further advised not to approach any person suspected of criminal activity but rather report such suspicion to the SAPS with a choice to remain anonymous.”
The suspect will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of possession of commercial explosives.
