Teenage pedestrian beaten and robbed
He got aggressive and hit me with a pistol when I pepper sprayed him, victim said.
A teenage girl has been beaten and robbed at Cronje Park in Pretoria Gardens.
The victim, who asked not to be named, said she was brutally assaulted for her tablet while on her way to her friend’s house last Thursday.
“I was walking near Cronje Park when a Polo passed me twice. A few minutes later, a guy came towards me, pulled out a gun and told me to remain still,” she said.
“He said he wanted my phone but I didn’t want to give it to him. I had a pepper spray in my pocket and I sprayed on his face.”
The victim said the robber got aggressive and hit her with a pistol on the back of the head.
“I tried to fight back but he was too strong, he picked me up and threw me into the ground before he fled with my tablet,” she said.
“He jumped into the Polo that I saw earlier and left while I was screaming for help.”
The victim said the Hercules police were not immediately helpful.
“I went to the station to report the robber but the officers said they wanted evidence that my tablet was stolen even though my pants were soaked with blood. One of the officers dropped me at my friend’s house after I was told to come back the next day,” she said.
“My mom and I went back the next day to lay a charge but we haven’t heard anything from them.”
The victim said she was recovering well even though she was still in shock and pain.
Hercules police could not be reached for comment.
Sunnyside cluster police spokesperson Coba Brits gave some tips on how pedestrians could protect themselves.
– Stay away from deserted or dark areas.
– As far as possible, leave valuables at home.
– If you are attacked or robbed, do not offer resistance or look at your attacker – your life is worth more than money.
– Carry your wallet somewhere not visible – not in your back pocket.
– If possible, avoid walking alone especially if the area is dangerous.
