SARS warns against tax scams
“Over the last few months, there have been a few incidents that have been reported to SARS of scam artists that have demanded money to wipe off debts.”
The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has warned of scam artists who pretend to be its representatives to defraud unsuspecting small business.
Sars said the scammers approach business owners claiming to be collectors of ‘outstanding payments’ on undeclared taxes.
“Over the last few months, there have been a few incidents that have been reported to Sars of scam artists that have demanded money to wipe off debts, ” said Sars.
The service urged all taxpayers and traders with outstanding accounts to resolve the matter directly with it.
“No money should be paid over to debt collectors or self-proclaimed Sars officials,”
If collectors ask for payment, they should be reported immediately.
“All outstanding tax, VAT or duties must only be deposited directly into SARS bank accounts.”
Taxpayers should report any suspicious activity to the Sars anti-corruption and fraud hotline on 0800-00-2870.
