State security to monitor terror alert
South Africa says it is working hard to curb violent extremism and terrorism following a terror alert by the US.
The work by the state security agency to curb violent extremism and terrorism to secure citizens and residents will continue, State Security Minister David Mahlobo said.
This after an alert warning a possible terror attack in the country was issued by the US diplomatic mission in South Africa at the weekend, .
“We remain a strong and stable democratic country and there is no immediate danger posed by the alert,” said Mahlobo.
The alert warned of possible terror attacks by Islamic militants at shopping malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The alert was part of the US government’s standard precautionary communication to its residents.
“The security services of the country have liaised with the Americans on the concerns they have and these engagements will continue as part of the ongoing work.”
In September last year, the US also warned of possible attacks by extremists in Pretoria.
Several embassies and consulates in the country were closed for several days in 2009 after the US officials described a “specific” threat to diplomatic missions in South Africa.
