Residents happy with metro’s promise for reserve safety

Residents in the east of Pretoria are happy that the metro has attended to security issues in nature reserves following numerous thefts in the area.
Friends of Groenkloof Nature Reserve (FGNR) chairperson Robrecht Tryhou said the metro kept its end of the bargain by making Groenkloof nature reserve safer.
Robrecht said parts of the broken electric fences were repaired and regular patrols were done by metro police in the reserve.
He said the reserve had appointed some of their staff to join hikers on the trails.
“We strongly advise however, that cyclists and hikers always travel in groups.”
Robrecht said the nature reserve’s security was attended to but criminals have started focusing on other areas.
Two attacks were reported on 14 and 28 May involving cyclists in the nearby Klapperkop nature reserve.
He said the agreement between residents and the metro at the cluster meeting on 10 May was to focus on making the entire area safe.
This could be done by properly fencing and protecting all the green areas in the Groenkloof Fountains Valley area.
He said residents and the FGNR appreciate the work already done by the city council and the police.
The metro confirmed security at the reserve was tightened this week.
“The SAPS and Tshwane metro police are working around the clock to ensure that security is tight,” said spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
He said most points raised during the cluster meeting in May have been addressed.
