Ten in court in satanism case
Trial for the Mamelodi West 10 is set for August 18.
Ten people accused of imputing witchcraft and malicious damage to property briefly appeared in the Mamelodi West Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Eight were arrested two months ago and two were added to the list of accused on Tuesday.
All were released on a warning.
The accused include prophet Eric Shikobela, head of the Holy faith Family Ministries Church in Mamelodi West.
The arrests followed violence that erupted in Mamelodi West after what was described as confessions of a so-called satanic society in Section B3.
Residents went on a rampage after the alleged confessions, made to Shikobela and recorded on video, were played to them.
They stoned and nearly destroyed two homes.
The ten accused each faces four counts of imputing witchcraft and two of malicious damage to property.
Shikobela earlier said a number of young people had told him they belonged to a secret satanic society.
The group of 10 will be back in court on 18 August.
