Sport Highlights, 15-17 July
Three young Pretoria boys will represent South Africa at the biggest golf tournament of them all, The Open, in Scotland.
The British Open golf tournament, also known just as The Open, and Davis Cup tennis are part of the sports menu this weekend.
Rugby
For the Bulls there are not much hope of still reaching the play-off stage of the SupeRugby tournament.
For this to happen, the Sharks will have to lose against the Sunwolves on Friday night in Durban.
Therefore, the Bulls will only be playing for the pride of the Blue Jersey when they run out against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday night. This game will start at 19:10.
Cricket
The South African A team is still touring in Zimbabwe and will play in the second four-day game against the Zimbabwe A team this weekend. The game start on Friday 15 July and the last day will be on Monday 18 July. Play will start at 10:00 daily.
Tennis
South Africa will play in a Davis Cup tie against Lithuania in the Euro Africa Group II this weekend from 15-17 July.
The South African team consists of players like Lloyd Harris, Tucker Vorster, Raven Klaasen and Ruan Roelofse. The last time the two teams met, was in 2014 when Lithuania defeated South Africa 3-2 in a tough tie at the Irene Country Club, Pretoria.
Lithuania beat their first round opponents Norway 3-2. South Africa served up a 5-0 victory over their first round opponents Luxembourg. Both teams are therefore playing for the chance to reach the third round of Group II Europe/Africa.
Athletics
The 11th annual AfriForum Springbok Vasbyt road race will take place on Saturday at the Voortrekker monument. The event consist of a 25km marathon-race, a 10km road race (both ran over rough terrain and therefore not suitable for baby strollers or wheelchairs.
Also no animals or vuvuzelas allowed. The 25km race starts at 07:20 and thereafter the other two races will follow at 07:30 and 07:40. Enquiries: Phone 071-405-5588.
Golf
With the biggest tennis tournament of the year just completed in London, our attention moves to the Scottish countryside where The Open Golf tournament, the biggest of the annual calendar, will be presented at Royal Troon Country Club this weekend.
Top South African players like Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, Richard Sterne and Ernie Els will be in action, but local golf lovers will keep a special eye on Pretoria boys like George Coetzee, Zander Lombard and Brandon Stone.
