Elderly keep healthy through exercise

Elderly people from around Soshanguve have devoted their time on Tuesdays and Thursdays mornings to exercise in order to fight off illnesses.

Elderly people from Soshanguve have dedicated their time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to working out at Soshanguve Giant Stadium.

The elderly said it was their way of keeping healthy and fighting off illness which were part of old age.

Seventy-year-old William Mashia, from Soshanguve Block K, initiated the fitness and training sessions.

“I started training them [the elderly] in 2008. I have realised that as you grow older you face health problems, so I help them exercise and play different games,” said Mashia

Jacob Baphela (67), from Soshanguve Block F, said since he started training with Mashia in 2010, he had felt younger.

Baphela previously had his hip replaced and said exercise had helped him maintain his health and now he did not mind walking long distances.

Seventy-year-old Sophie Nahwatsileng, from Block L, said exercising helped keep her stress levels down.

The elderly of Soshanguve also meet their peers from different provinces once a year, to have a fun day of exercise and play different games.
