Youth creates park for pupils
Ward 38 youth members create a safe environment for the pupils of Shirenda Primary School.
Armed with spades and wheelbarrows, the youth of Ward 38 in Mamelodi West Section B2 woke up early on Tuesday to do their bit for Mandela Day.
They cleaned up a passageway to Shirenda Primary School that local residents had used to dump rubbish.
One of the youth, Lorraine Ngobeni, said the aim was to create a greenbelt in the area for children to play.
The youth wanted to create an area away from the road as there was a danger of children being hit by vehicles.
“We decided to start on Tuesday, with the aim to finish before the school re-opened on 18 July,” said Ngobeni.
“We cleaned the area so that we could plant a lawn and hopefully trees in the future.”
Lucky Ncube, Bennet Mkhaweni and Kabelo Banda came up with the idea to create an area for children after they realised it was no longer safe for the pupils to walk past the rubbish to school.
They believed criminals would use the tall grass as a hideout sooner or later.
Giving 67 minutes of service is a way to commemorate the late former president Nelson Mandela’s life and usually occurs on his birthday, 18 July.
