Local sprinter Akani Simbine finished first in the men’s 100m heats to qualify for the semi-finals in the Rio Olympics on Saturday afternoon.
The 23-year-old finished in a time 10:14 in heat 8. He will join Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin,Yohan Blake and others in Tuesday’s semi-finals.
Simbine came into the Olympics games with the fifth fastest time of the year. He was to be a man to watch this season.
Another South African,who competed in the 100m is Henircho Bruintjies, who finished sixth in his heat. Unfortunately he failed to reach the semi-finals.
