Today marks the anniversary of one of the world’s most tragic events.
The 9/11 terrorist attacks were carried out in the USA 15 years ago, on the morning of September 11, 2001
Four coordinated terrorist attacks were orchestrated against the USA by Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda.
Four passenger airliners of two major US passenger air carriers (United Airlines and American Airlines), were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists who took control of the planes.
Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed separately into the North and South towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City.
The attacks killed 2 996 people and injured over 6 000. It caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure damage and $3 trillion in total cost.
Within an hour and 42 minutes both 110-story towers collapsed. Debris and resulting fires caused partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the World Trade Centre complex.
The third plane crashed into the Pentagon, headquarters of the US department of defence in Washington DC.
The fourth plane, which had also been on route to Washington DC, crashed into a field in Pensylvania after some passengers fought with the terrorists, forcing the plane down.
The destruction of the World Trade Centre and nearby infrastructure caused serious damage to the economy of the Lower Manhattan area and had a significant negative effect on global financial markets.
