Victim’s family angry as murder suspect is released on bail
The family fears what he could do next.
A man accused of stabbing 18-year-old Mpho Khotle to death in Marokolong, Hammanskraal on 4 September, is out on bail.
Tshepiso Makhubela was released on R1 000 bail on Monday.
According to the investigating officer, Makhubela was not a threat to society.
The deceased’s family was livid after they found out and wanted to know why Makhubela had been released.
The deceased’s brother Joshua said: “For this to happen a few weeks after the crime was committed is heartbreaking and scary.”
A resident told Rekord they were angry that Makhubela had been released on bail.
“Police always blame us when we take the law into our hands, but it is because of such things,” said the source.
“We understand he must have his day in court, but in the interim he should not be free to possibly commit another crime.”
Mpho was at a local tavern with two of his friends when he allegedly argued with Makhubela, apparently over a girlfriend.
Makhubela then attacked Khotle, stabbing him several times in the upper body.
Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said the victim died at the scene.
Khotle’s two friends, Amos (24) and Jabu Kunene (28), were also attacked by Makhubela.
“They were critically wounded after they were also stabbed several times in the upper body by the same attacker,” said Moremi.
The two Kunene brothers spent almost two weeks in hospital but have since been discharged.
After stabbing the three people, Makhubela fled the scene.
“Police launched a manhunt for the man, and he was later arrested at his aunt’s house in Carousel View,” said Moremi.
Makhubela is expected to appear in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court again on 27 October, three days after Khotle would have turned 19.
He will face a charge of murder and two charges of attempted murder.
