Pensioner robbed at mall

A pensioner's bag containing R3 000 was stolen at Denlyn Mall on Tuesday.

A pensioner was robbed of R3 000 at Denlyn Mall, Mamelodi, when she went to withdraw social grant money for her and her grandchildren on Tuesday.

The woman said she was followed by two ladies who stole her bag while she was having lunch at KFC with her grandchildren.

Christina Mthimunye (69) said she was supposed to pay her bills and buy groceries, but went to KFC because her grandchildren were hungry.

“My bag with everything inside, including my identity book, was next to my chair. The two ladies came in, ordered food and sat next to us. After they left, my bag was gone,” said Mthimunye.

“I don’t know what happened or how they took the bag. The two ladies were nowhere to be found.”

Mthimunye said the money was supposed to feed her and her whole family for the whole month and cover the water and electricity bills.

“I don’t know what I am going to do or what we are going to eat,” said Mthimunye.

Mamelodi West police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said they had nothing about the robbery on record, but had recently held a meeting with shop owners and shoppers to raise awareness and educate them about robberies.

“We will also be handing out pamphlets with information on how to avoid these crimes.”
