Pedestrians arrested on highway
Road safety operation to reduce pedestrian accidents.
Tshwane metro police have arrested eight pedestrians this week for walking on the N4 highway and Solomon Mahlangu Drive.
The arrests were made on Thursday during a road safety operation for the observation of Transport Month and to reduce deaths and accidents on freeways.
The Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) reminded pedestrians it was illegal to walk on freeways.
The safety operation highlighted the National Road Traffic Act that stipulated no one was allowed to walk or stop on a freeway and that motorists were not allowed to pick up or drop off passengers on freeways.
Anyone caught contravening the law could be prosecuted, metro police said.
TMPD said they were planning similar operations to ensure safety for all road users.
People arrested on Thursday were taken to Silverton-police station and were expected to appear in court soon.
