Nine arrested in Moot
“Residents also contribute to the problem because they employ these job-seekers .”
Nine suspects were arrested and 13 fines to the value of R10 000 were issued during a crime combating operation in the Moot at the weekend.
The operation was conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Tshwane metro police.
Vehicle check points (VCPs) were held in Wonderboom South and Gezina on Friday to address driving offences such as disobeying road traffic signs.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the operation came after numerous accidents occurred at notorious intersections of Fourteenth Avenue and Meyer Street; De Beer Street and Tenth Avenue; and Nico Smith Street and Johan Heyns Drive.
During the operation, a 24-year-old taxi driver was pulled over.
“He could not produce a valid driver’s licence or proof of identification,” said Weilbach.
The other eight arrests were made for lesser offences in Gezina.
Weilbach said the contributing factor to the criminal activities in the moot area was due to the influx of undocumented job seekers.
“Residents also contribute to the problem because they give these job seekers jobs.”
She said police advised residents not to trust strangers blindly.
“Some of these job seekers use these jobs to plan their criminal activities.”
She said it was also illegal to employ an undocumented person and offenders could be fined for doing so.
Pretoria Moot station commander Colonel Kate Malope said the joint operations would continue as part of the safer festive season operations.
The SAPS offered motorists the following safety tips:
– Do not drink and drive
– If you want to participate in celebrations, arrange for a designated driver as roadblocks are a given this time of the year
– Always have your driver’s licence and identification on you while driving
– Make sure you renew your driver’s licence on time
– Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy
– Always make photocopies of your employees’ identification documents
– Take photos and keep a record of employees’ details and addresses
