Police advice the public members to avoid walking alone at all cost.
The public is advised to walk in groups to avoid common robberies.
Last Friday the Silverton police addressed residents of Mamelodi and Nellmapius about avoiding footpaths at all costs.
This comes after the police received several complaints about people being robbed of their belongings and raped in a footpath running from Equestria to Nellmapius.
Silverton police spokesperson, Captain Jan Sepatu, said most of the victims are people working in the Equestria area. They are robbed in the mornings and afternoons walking to and from work.
“Our aim is to raise awareness about this area which we have now declared a hotspot,” said Sepato.
The footpath is isolated and hidden in the bush and criminals have started to rob people there,” he said.
They have warned residents in the past to walk in groups of five to 10 people to avoid being robbed or becoming a victim.
“But now they have become relaxed and started walking alone again, thinking they are safe. We are giving them advice to avoid becoming victims.
“There is police visibility but people are advised that if you are walking alone to and from work to use alternative roads or walk in groups.”
He said the police are doing everything in their power to keep civilians safe.
At the moment no arrests have been made but the police are working tirelessly to catch the perpetrators.
People are also advised to report any crime or suspicious looking person to the police on 08600 10 111.
