Brothers help robbery victim
“We heard a gunshot and saw four armed men offloading luggage then getting into a getaway car.”
Two brothers risked their own safety to rush a man to hospital who had been wounded during an armed robbery in the east of Pretoria recently.
The man had been shot in an armed robbery, witnessed by the brothers last Sunday around 16:45.
The 25-year-old and 18-year-old brothers from Faerie Glen, who asked not be identified, said the attack happened on the corner of Glenwood Road and Oberon Avenue.
The 25-year-old said they were driving to a local shopping centre in Oberon Avenue when they heard a gunshot.
“We turned around and went to have a look.”
He said they saw armed men offloading something from a black SUV Mercedes-Benz.
The armed men then got into another Mercedez Benz and fled, skipping a red light in January Masilela Drive towards Lynnwood.
The 25-year-old said he and his brother rushed to the SUV to help.
“In the car was a family of four. A man, his wife, their daughter and the girl’s aunt in a state of shock. The man had been shot in the leg and was conscious,” he said adding they helped the man into their own car.
“We quickly transported him to a nearby hospital.”
He said the family was returning from Bela-Bela when they were ambushed.
The brothers’ mother said she was shocked when they told her the story on their return home.
The brother’s said the entire attack lasted less than a minute.
“Fortunately another couple also apparently witnessed the incident and helped.”
Marie Colyn posted to her Facebook page she and her husband had witnessed the armed robbery and had also stopped to help.
Colyn wrote she had waited with the women who had remained behind in the SUV for 35 minutes before the police arrived.
Colyn said she wanted to thank Bull Security and other security firms for their assistance.
Garsfontein police spokesperson Captain Ilze Jones said a robbery with a firearm had been reported at the station.
She said the attack was reported at around 17:30 on the Sunday.
On Monday Rekord was still trying to establish the identity of the wounded man and how he was doing in hospital.
