Hunt for gang who abducted a doctor couple
The suspect will appear in court again next Monday.
A 43-year-old man appeared in Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the alleged involvement in the abduction of two local doctors.
Andrew Michael Mzuroei (43) was arrested on Friday for his alleged involvement in the abduction of the doctors.
A gang of about 17 armed men allegedly abducted doctors Vongani Marivate and Mpolokeng Mol (Marivate’s wife).
The couple had just locked up their practice in Ga-Rankuwa at around 21:30 on Thursday and were on their way home close by when the gang pounced on them.
The couple was taken to their home where the gang ransacked the property. After taking several items from the house the gang took the couple Ratjiepan near Hammanskraal where they were kept until the following day.
Police spokesperson Captain Mathews Nkoadi confirmed on Monday that Mzuroei had appeared in court.
“The case has been remanded for further investigation. The suspect will appear again next Monday,” said Nkoadi.
He said the police were working around the clock to nail the other suspects and that three vehicles had been taken from the doctors’ residence.
On Monday Marivate told Rekord he was still shaken by the ordeal.
“We are traumatised. We don’t know what the motive was, we are still gripped by fear. A car stopped in front of us. Several gunmen approached and forced us into the back seat of our car. Then they drove off with us,” he said.
“They took our phones, jewellery, money and other valuables. They then drove us to my house which is not far from the practice. They had covered our heads so we had no idea where they were taking us. They then ransacked the house before driving away with us.”
Marivate said they were released around 10:00 on Friday after police were able to track down the vehicles.
“We are getting counselling in the form of support from church groups and the community who have been coming to our home since learning about the incident.”
The couple were dumped in Hammanskraal on Friday morning and were assisted by residents who contacted the police immediately.
Nkoadi said police were hopeful they would nail the other suspects soon.
“One of the cars was traced via a tracking device and found in the possession of the 43-year-old (Mzuroei) ,” he said.
