Worker shocked to see ‘body floating in Apies’
Police said it was too dark to search for the body.
The body of an unidentified person has been “spotted floating” in the Apies River.
A farm worker in Petronella, north of Pretoria said he saw the body while doing his laundry at the river around 18:00 on Monday.
“I saw a white plastic bag floating with something inside. When I pulled the bag closer to see what was inside, I was shocked to see a lifeless body,” said Rachid Wick.
Wick said he ran to tell his boss and he could not tell if the body was that of a man or woman.
Dawie Botes, his employer said he immediately notified the police.
“They got here around 20:00 and told us they won’t be able to do anything about it as it was too dark to see.”
The police from Hammanskraal arrived on Tuesday afternoon but their search yielded nothing.
“Two police officers arrived here around 14:00 but they found nothing,” said Botes.
The farm owner said it would not have been difficult to find the body as the current is quite slow at the moment.
“Had the police deployed a search and rescue team on Monday evening, they would have found the body as the water was not flowing strong enough to push it against the high wall dividing my farm and the next.”
Botes said the service they were receiving from police was not satisfying. He said sometimes police do not come when called to attend to a crime or they arrive hours later.
The Hammanskraal police could not be reached for comment.
