UPDATE: 11 shotguns seized during student protests

"Two guards panicked and fled the scene including one who allegedly accidentally discharged a shotgun."

This comes after a TUT student was allegedly shot during #FeesMustFall protests at the campus.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Sally de Beer said: “Two guards panicked and fled the scene including one who allegedly accidentally discharged a shotgun.”

She said the ammunition would be sent for ballistic testing and a charge of attempted murder had been laid.

A Rekord reporter at the Pretoria West campus was told students threw a petrol bomb at one of the police nyalas and pelted it with stones.

Students also said police fired rubber bullets at them as they were trying to make their way out of the Pretoria West campus to join other protesters in Soshanguve.

During a media briefing, student union leaders condemned the level of force applied by police when dealing with protesting students.

“We are worried about the levels of police presence on the campus. Students were peaceful and unarmed, yet police charged and fired rubber bullets,” said student activist Sithembiso Shandu.

He denied the use of a petrol bomb by students on a police vehicle.

“They should come with evidence and present it in a court of law,” he said.

By Thursday afternoon protesters were moving to the Arcadia campus, central Pretoria.
