A notorious Mamelodi robber was jailed after court case that lasted four years.
Simon Makhubela (46) from Mabopane was sentenced to 48 years on September 27.
“This is a great success for the police to achieve, but it wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the information the police received from a bystander,” said police spokesperson, Captain Johannes Maheso.
Makhubela was arrested in 2012 in Mamelodi West Section D3 after robbing a 46-year-old woman of an undisclosed amount of money in Sinoville.
Simon Makhubela and his accomplice followed the victim after she had withdrawn money and robbed her at gunpoint.
A bystander took the registration number of the vehicle of the robbers and reported the crime.
“Mamelodi police were patrolling when they received the message to be on the lookout for the suspects’ vehicle. The police spotted the vehicle in Mamelodi and when they tried to stop it, the suspects fled. Police ensued until the suspects were cornered in Mamelodi West, Section D3 where one suspect managed to flee on foot,” said Maheso.
“The suspect was arrested and found in possession of two unlicensed firearms with the serial numbers erased and an undisclosed amount of money.”
The detectives also managed to link Makhubela with other crimes.
Makubhela was sentenced to 12 years for armed robbery in Sinoville, eight years for possession of stolen property (money), 10 years for possession of two illegal firearms and ammunition, 12 years for hijacking a vehicle in Pretoria West and six years for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
His accomplice was still at large and police were still investigating.
