Vehicle hijackings increased this year according to crime stats released by the police in September.
Although most crimes increased but vehicle hijackings were highest.
Hijackings increased by 14.3 percent, nearly seven times more than any other crime, according to the anti-crime initiative Centurion Concerned Citizens.
“This means approximately 40 cars are hijacked every day.”

Police said the majority of hijackings occurred outside victim’s homes.

Concerned Citizens shared tips to help avoid a hijacking:
– When approaching your vehicle, keep your key ready but not visible.
– Unlock your car when you’re close by.
– Check the backseat before getting into your car.
– A well maintained car is less likely to break down and leave you vulnerable.
– Plan your route and let someone and let someone what time you expect to be at your destination.
– Tell someone else what your route is so someone will know where to go to look for you.
– Keep an eye on your rear-view mirror to see if you are being followed.
– Avoid driving with your windows open and keep the doors locked.
– Put all valuables out of sight.
– Avoid distractions while driving such as using a cellphone.
– If you suspect you are being followed, drive to your nearest police station or a busy public area.
– When approaching a red traffic light, slow down so that you only reach it as it turns green.
– Make sure your driveway is well-lit and clear of shrubbery.
– If possible, park in a well-lit place, preferably with guards on duty.
– When stopping behind another vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front so you can make an emergency escape if necessary.
– Change your routes and your schedule on a regular basis if possible.
– Make arriving at your destination safer by calling ahead to ask someone to open and close the gate for you.
– When arriving home, never turn into your driveway to stop in front of a closed gate. Rather remain in the street with your vehicle facing the street when you wait for the automatic gate to open. This will ensure that you are not “boxed” in.
– If you have to manually open your gate, then park in front of it and open the gate as quickly as possible (or phone someone to open it for you), drive in and close it immediately.
– Keep an eye on people at intersections.
– Be careful of people who might try to distract you.
– Most hijackers are the well dressed, inconspicuous people possibly reading newspapers at the corner, so treat everyone with suspicion.
– If you are hijacked, remember that your life is worth more than the price of replacing your car.
