Five students were arrested during a #FeesMustFall protest in Ga-Rankuwa on Monday.
This happened after students of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University blocked the roads in Ga-Rankuwa with burning tyres and rocks.
Police spokesperson Captain Mathews Nkoadi said police were called in to deal with the situation.
“Five students were arrested after they blocked the roads with burning tyres and pelted passing vehicles with stones,” said Nkoadi.
He said the students were detained at Ga-Rankuwa police station and were expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of public violence.
He said police dispersed the rest of the students and were keeping an eye on the situation.
Students at state universities across the country have been protesting for free education under the campaign #FeesMustFall.
Protests began several weeks ago after Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande announced that state universities could determine their own fee hikes, up to eight percent.
Last week, TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter said the university had suspended classes.
“Due to protest action that erupted this morning and the barricading of gates, Pretoria and Ga-Rankuwa staff and students have been advised to go home until further notice,” De Ruyter said.
