A motorist was taken in for questioning after she ran over and killed a 7-year-old school girl in Ga-Rankuwa Zone 8 on Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Mathews Nkoadi said the woman, who was rushing to work around 07:00, had apparently not seen the girl and only realised what had happened afterwards.
“The girl was certified dead on the scene by paramedics,” he said.
Nkoadi said the girl was walking to school when she was hit by a the speeding car.
A culpable homicide docket was opened at the Ga-Rankuwa Police Station for investigation.
“The motorist told police that she did not notice the girl,” said Nkoadi.
The woman was later released to receive medical attention but the investigation continues.
Recently, a medical student was hit by a speeding bus while crossing a road in front of Sefako Makgato Medical Science University.
“We are appealing to parents to take responsibility to ensure that their children arrive safely at school,” he said.
He also appealed to motorists to drive with caution and within the regulated speed to avoid accidents.
Meanwhile, Nkoadi said police were on the manhunt for robbers targeting students in residences around Ga-Rankuwa, particularly Zone 1 and 2.
“Most victims are robbed of their cellphones and laptops or tablets at gunpoint,” he said.
He appealed to landlords in these areas to upgrade their security and be vigilant at all times.
