The police had cornered two men in a stolen Toyota double cab in Nellmapius around 03:00, leading to the exchange of fire
Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the men had hijacked the car in Akasia on Monday.
The car was traced to the Mamelodi area on the Tuesday morning from where a chase ensured.
The car eventually stopped on the corner of Alwyn and Qwaqwa streets and its two occupants opened fire on the police.
“Police returned fire, and wounded one of the men aged 39, in the leg.”
Sepato said the other perpetrator grabbed his accomplice’s gun and fled on foot.
“The 39-year-old was arrested and taken to hospital under heavy police guard.”
Sepato said the man would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court once fit to answer to charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and attempted murder.
