Discussions between Atteridgeville taxi bosses are underway following Tuesday’s taxi protest, the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) has said.
Atteridgeville taxi drivers blocked a road leading into and out of the township with burning tyres and rocks.
Gauteng Santaco Taxi Association chairman Abner Tsebe said: “The protest was due to internal operation issues between taxi drivers in Atteridgeville.”
Tsebe would not say what the disputes were about, but assured commuters’ safety.
“Meetings are underway to discuss a way forward. We are hopeful that an agreement will be reached but so far taxis are operating normally in the township.”
“We would also like to apologise to the community for causing disruptions.”
Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi earlier said the protest was sparked by a feud between two taxi associations, but he later retracted the statement.
Mufamadi said no injuries or damage was reported and no arrests had been made.
Pretoria CPF member Thesigan Pillay said it was unfortunate that the taxi protest brought everything to a standstill.
“We as the CPF condemn violence of any nature, however what’s concerning is that innocent people get caught in the mix as they rely on taxis as a means of transport to get to work,” he said.
