VIDEO: Another criminal tactic discovered
Motorists are urged to physically check that their car doors are locked.
Criminals are now targeting distracted motorists at parking lots with a new strategy, a resident has warned.
Video footage taken last Friday in Menlyn Retail Park, shows that the resident, Eugene Enslin and his friend, were targeted as they got out of the car to fetch something from the boot.
As the two men chat, a man gets out of a white vehicle, walks over to Enslin’s car, opens the rear door then returns to his car.
But when Enslin’s friend notices the door is open, and closes it, the man’s plan is foiled and he drives off.
Instead of using the remote signal jammer, criminals now drive into shopping centres around 16:00 or 17:00 to target motorists coming to do shopping.
The opportunists wait for something to distract the motorist, then they open a car door undetected and return to their car to wait for the motorists to “lock” the doors with their remote and walk away, leaving their cars vulnerable to criminals.
Enslin warned motorists to always make sure their vehicle doors were closed properly before walking away.
“Mothers are the ones most at risk because their attention is already on their children.”
He said last week a woman’s laptop was stolen from her car by thieves using a similar modus operandi.
