A man is targeting women in the area, the police have warned.
Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said two women been robbed by a man who claimed to be an advocate only to vanish with their bags, cellphones and other personal items.
Sepato said on Wednesday, the man gave a woman hitchhiking to KwaMhlanga on Soutpan Road a lift.
“The man seemed to use the same information when introducing himself to these women,” Sepato said.
Sepato said the woman told the police the man claimed he had to fetch his brother from Nelmapius first.
“The woman didn’t mind.”
Sepato said when the man got to Nelmapius the car seemed to have a problem.
“The man then asked the woman to give him a push but as soon as she got out the car, the man fled with her bags, cellphone and possessions.”
Sepato said another woman was also robbed by “an advocate” recently.
He said the “advocate” picked up the woman going to Witbank in Hatfield.
The two stopped at a petrol station along the way to get drinks and the man returned to the car pretending to have forgotten his wallet.
Sepato said the man again disappeared with the woman’s bag, cellphone and valuables which had been left in the car.
“We have not confirmed if one man was involved in both case but have identified a pattern. We advise women to be cautious at all times to avoid falling victim to crime.”
