Brazilians crowned continental kings

Mamelodi Sundowns are not only the kings of Pretoria, but the kings of Africa.

Mamelodi Sundowns have been named the CAF Champions League winners after beating Zamalek in Egypt on Sunday evening.

Despite going down 1-0 in Alexandria, Sundowns won the title 3-1 on aggregate having beaten Zamalek 3-0 in the first leg in Atteridgeville last week.

Many took to social media to applaud the Brazilians’ resilience after weathering the Zamalek storm for 90 minutes.

The Pretoria side has become the second South African team to walk away with the title after Orlando Pirates did so in 1995.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates congratulated the Brazilians on their victory on their respective Twitter accounts.

The win resulted in Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane becoming the first South African coach to win the champions league.

Pirates won with Ronald Mkhandawire at the helm.

This was Mkhandawire’s first official game after his boss was fired only a few days before.

The Pretoria team will now switch their attention to the Fifa Club World Cup that starts in December. There will face champions of Europe, North America, Asia and South America.
