Angry Mamelodi residents returned their dustbins to the Mini Munitoria last Thursday due to it being too expensive.
President of Concerned Community for Service Delivery in Mamelodi, Oupa Mtshweni said: “We are taking the dustbins back to the municipal offices because Tshwane metro never kept their promises.”
Residents have recently received electricity bills charging them an extra R270 for waste management.
“We were not told about the extra R270 when they gave us the dustbins in 2014 and many of the households are pensioners and cannot afford to pay that amount,” said Mtshweni.
“We are shocked because why are they saying they are cleaning Mamelodi when it is dirty?”
A total of 19 dustbins were returned.
“All we want is a formal meeting with the metro to explain the billing system to us,” said Mtshweni.
Mtshweni said the residents will temporarily use plastic bags to collect waste and they do not need the dustbins until the matter is resolved.
The Concerned Community also complained about poor service delivery and the indigent evaluation and deregistration of the poor of the poorest system (POP)
“We call on the mayor to stop, reverse and review the process. We are also going to handover a memorandum for [poor service delivery].”
The metro has not commented yet.
