A man has been arrested in Pretoria central after he was caught red handed with stolen cables.
The Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) said the man was spotted with the cables on Monday afternoon.
“Officers spotted the man hiding on the side of the road carrying a wire around his body in Es’kia Mphahlele Drive near Park Town estate. He threw everything [away] and ran when he saw the officers,” said TMPD spokesperson Issac Mahamba adding the officers gave chase and apprehended the man.
“It was later found that there was a complaint about stolen overhead cables in Paul Kruger and Malhebe streets and it was the same cables found with him.”
Mahamba said the metro police was mandated to deal with cable theft in the city.
“Remember we mentioned a few months back that the mayor told us to intensify patrols and ensure that cable theft is dealt with. So we have been attending to the hotspots and ensuring that those behind the crime are brought to book,” added Mahamba.
The man was expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on chargers of theft on Tuesday.
