Commotion at city council
The mayor accepted the memorandum and promised to attend to grievances.
Chaos erupted outside the chambers of Tshwane metro on Thursday afternoon when union members arrived to hand over a memorandum of grievances.
Hundreds of SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) marchers demanded to see mayor Solly Msimanga as they sang and chanted his name outside.
And a commotion ensued when they tried to force their way into the chambers prompting the police to fire stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the livid crowd.
The mayor was later escorted by the police to receive the memorandum.
Samwu Tshwane secretary Mpho Tladinyane, using a police loud hailer read the memorandum.
“We demand that all workers currently on contract and providing service to the city through outsourced companies to be insourced and be employed on a permanent basis,” said Tladinyane to loud cheers.
He warned the mayor to address internal strife in the city to avoid more mass action.
“We know about the racism that has been taking place in the city and we want to make it clear to the mayor that we are not going to tolerate that, and he must attend to the issues of racism with immediate effect,” added Tladiynyane.
The union said its members were concerned about their livelihood.
“Security officials, cleaners and meter readers want to work for the city and the mayor has to ensure that all these workers are absorbed by the city because they are concerned about being employed on contract,” said Tladinyane.
