Stun grenades were used on members of the SA Municipal Worker’s Union on Thursday when they tried to gain entry to the Tshwane council chambers to hand over a memorandum to mayor Solly Msimanga.
Union regional secretary Mpho Tladinyane said members had started protesting in Marabastad earlier in the day for decent work.
“The march encompassed a variety of issues, from racism to decent wages, which form part of Cosatu’s fight for decent work,” said Tladinyane.
From Marabastad, protesters marched to the mayor’s office in Church Square to submit a memorandum of demands.
“We are giving the mayor of Tshwane 15 minutes to come collect the memorandum,” SA Communist Party secretary-general Tshwane Apson Makaung said.

When the mayor did not arrive, protesters marched to the council chambers where a special council meeting was being held with councillors.
Police fired stun grenades and tear gas into the crowed of around 2 000 angry protesters, who tried to use force when they were barred entry into the chambers.
No injuries have been reported, but the protest is still ongoing and a tactical response team has been deployed to restore calm.
