Tough contest for Supersport in Telkom Knockout
Both Chiefs and Pirates have made it into the quarters and are likely to face Matsatsantsa.
Following Saturday’s 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town in the Telkom Knockout, Supersport United are on their way for the silverware this season.
The Pretoria-based club has won at least one trophy in the past two seasons and coach Stuart Baxter will hope to keep the tradition going.
A solo effort from winger Thuso Phala gave Matsatsantsa a hard fought win at the Lucas Moripe stadium on Saturday evening.
Both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have made it into the quarter finals which makes the job more difficult for Baxter’s men.
Although Supersport defeated Pirates in last season’s Nedbank final and have knocked out Chiefs in tournaments recently. It could be tricky for the Tshwane side because both Soweto giants are desperate for silverware after finishing last season without trophies.
The recent CAf triumph by Sundowns should inspire Matsatsantsa, who are themselves venturing into the wilderness of Africa next year to take part in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Sundowns on the other hand, still have to compete in the Telkom Knockout round of 16. If they win their game, it will mean that Pirates, Chiefs and ‘Downs will stand in the way of Matsatsantsa.
It’s possible that Supersport could face all the three teams in the competition but unlikely.
A replay between Ajax and Supersport will be played at the Cape Town stadium on Saturday night. Supersport have claimed a fourth on the log standing but they are still a further five points away from log leaders Chiefs.
A win on Saturday, will put them them within reach of success.
