Fugitive arrested in hideout in Eersterust
Shongwane held three police officers at gunpoint, locked them up then allegedly shot another dead before making his escape.
A notorious fugitive from the law has been arrested in his hideout in Eersterust, Pretoria.
Joshua Bomba Shongwane (30) was arrested on Monday by the members of the Hawks tactical operation and national investigation units.
Head of Hawks Lieutenant-General Mthandazo Ntlemeza reiterated that whoever killed a police officer would be hunted down and put behind bars.
“No one kills a police officer and enjoys a peace of mind. People who threaten the security of our state by killing officers will be hunted down and we will ensure that they face the full wrath of the law,” Ntlemeza said.
Shongwane had been wanted for the murder of Captain Lamola, and appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to face charges of murder, hijacking, escaping from custody, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.
Provincial police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said Shongwane had been arrested for armed robbery and was in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court where he was due to appear when he broke out.
“He held police officers in the cells up at gunpoint, took the keys to the cells from them, locked them up then went to the floor below where he shot and killed another officer then escaped.
“The officer died on the scene.”
He said Shongwane was a serial hijacker, and had been arrested in possession of an Audi A1 hijacked in KwaThema, Springs in September.
