Tshwane residents came out in their numbers on Monday to celebrate the newly crowned champions of Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Brazilians, as Sundowns are known, painted the city yellow during their victory parade through various townships.
The team visited Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Mabopane, Atteridgeville en route to Sammy Marks Square in the Pretoria CBD where the team took to the stage to be individually introduced.
The supporters sang songs and cheered as team captain Hlompho Kekana lifted the trophy.
Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe said it was unbelievable that so many people had turned up to celebrate.
Sundowns won the CAF Champions League after defeating Egyptian giants Zamalek in Alexandria last Sunday 3-1 on aggregate.
Motsepe thanked the supporters for always standing behind the team.
“Without your support we couldn’t have won this beautiful cup that we have here,” said Motsepe.
“I feel really proud of the entire team, from the technical team, the backroom staff, the players, management and everyone including the supporters. I was happy with the way the team won. They played with heart and soul and I think the people understand this.”
Motsepe said he was pleased with the growth of the club’s support since he bought.
“We appeal to the people of Tshwane to not only show it [support] here but also to come to the stadium and support the team,” he said.
