A 12-year-old boy was almost abducted in the Moot recently.
According to the boy’s father, Adam Stemmet (34), this happened around 07:00 in 15th Avenue, Gezina.
“My son was already outside our gates when we heard him screaming for someone to help.”
“When we got outside the man was pulling my son by his arm.”
Stemmet said he phoned the police for help immediately.
Kilnerpark Security and the police arrived on the scene.
Kilnerpark Security spokesperson Ancelize van der Kooi said police could not arrest the man because he had not abducted the boy, he only attempted to.
“The police locked him up for four hours after which he was released,” she said.
Stemmet said after he was released the man returned to their house.
“He was watching us for the rest of that day,” he said.
Van der Kooi appealed to residents to always keep children safe and protected.
“Always keep an eye on your children, accidents can happen so easily and your house is not always as safe as you think,” she said.
The SAPS website provides the following safety tips on how to keep children safe:
– Children must know how to contact their parents, the police or another close relative in an emergency.
– When children are alone at home and someone phones, they should say their parents are home but cannot come to the phone right away.
– When children are home alone and someone knocks on the door, they should find out the person’s identity without opening the door.
– If it is at all possible, children should play and walk in groups with other children.
– Children should always ask their parents for permission before accepting gifts from strangers.
– Develop code words for anyone you trust to fetch your children and teach your children the words. Tell them not to go with anyone who does not know the code words.
– Be sensitive to any changes in your children’s behaviour or attitude. Encourage open communication and learn how to be an active listener.
– You must know where your children are at all times. Know their friends and be clear with them about the locations and homes they may visit.
