Robberies and smash and grabs are on the increase, Erasmia police have warned.
Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said motorists should be aware, especially driving along the R511 and N14 near Diepsloot and towards Hartebees.
“Over the weekend, a man’s Toyota Yaris was hijacked after he allegedly picked up two unknown males who were hiking along the R511.”
As they were approaching the N14, the driver was forced out of the vehicle at gunpoint,” he said.
Moloto said the men drove off with the victim’s car.
Another man was robbed when he picked up two females who were hiking on the N14.
“While driving, they forced him to stop on the side of the road following arguments and claims that he wanted to rape them,” Moloto said.
A few moments later, three men approached the vehicle and robbed the driver at gunpoint.
“Through investigation, the police have learned that the suspects use women trick male motorists into believing that they need a lift, which leads to motorist being robbed, “ Moloto said.
“It is also a concern following a spate of robberies at Hennops River on the R511 where people from different churches visit the river to fetch water or pray and they are targeted by criminals.”
Moloto appealed to the public to avoid going to the river as the place is isolated and dangerous.
