Shock as Checkers employees steal from store
The five women apparently walked out of Kolonnade Checkers carrying bags filled with Sassa money.
Five women stole money from a supermarket chain outlet at Kolonnade Shopping Centre, north of Pretoria, on Monday 31 October.
The five Checkers Hyper employees allegedly walked out of the store with bags of SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) money.
According to a reliable source, more than R1 million was stolen from the store.
Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk confirmed the theft took place just after the store closed.
“The employees in charge of balancing the cash at the end of the day had taken Sassa money from the cash registers to one of the offices that did not have a security camera.”
The undisclosed amount of money was smuggled out of the store in duffle bags.
Shoprite Corporate spokesperson, Sarita van Wyk, responded to an enquiry from Rekord saying: “The incident is currently the subject of a police investigation and the supermarket chain is therefore not in a position to provide further comment.”
“It suffices to say that the money stolen was the property of Shoprite Checkers and that contingency plans were made to serve customers with Sassa pay-outs the next day.”
