‘Cable thief’ in a shootout with police
“When he saw the police were after him, he started shooting.”
A 23 year-old “cable thief” was injured in a shootout with the police on Wednesday night has been taken to hospital.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said officers were on patrol near the Rooiwal power station, when they spotted a man stealing cables.
They approached the man and “when he saw the police were after him, he started shooting at them”.
Mahamba said the officers returned fire and the man was injured.
Mahamba said none of the officers were injured in the shootout, and the suspect was under police guard in hospital.
He said a firearm was recovered from the man, and spades, knives and other digging tools were also found on the scene.
Mashamba warned the criminals that the metro police were working hard to combat cable theft.
“Officers are deployed in different trenches to prevent this crime.”
He urged residents to report any information regarding cable theft to the nearest police station immediately or to the Tshwane metro police on 012-358-7095/6.
