Police in the east intend clamping down on crime this festive season.
Garsfontein police spokesperson Captain Ilze Jones said the Garsfontein police, CPF /68-nd security companies were putting several preemptive projects in place to tighten security.
“We [police] aim to respond quicker, make more arrests and secure successful convictions. We will not allow criminals to terrorise homes during the upcoming festive season.”
She said the police’s swift response resulted in several arrests last week.
A 43-year-old man was arrested in Constantia Park on Tuesday after a resident alerted police about a man scaling her neighbour’s fence.
Jones said the police arrested the man for trespassing on someone’s premises with unknown intent.
“The matter is still under investigation and the man remains behind bars.”
On the same day, three men were arrested following a tip-off by residents.
“While patrolling the Constantia Park area, police spotted a silver grey Toyota Yaris. Upon investigation police found the vehicle had been reported stolen in Atteridgeville.”
Jones said the men were found in possession of house breaking implements.
Dockets for housebreaking and possession of housebreaking implements were opened at the station.
This followed the arrest of a 38-year-old man Faerie Glen on Monday.
An officer noticed a vehicle driving at an unusually slow pace. The officers checked the vehicle’s licence plate and realised they were false.
Jones said the driver sped-up when police attempted to pull him over and a chase ensued.
“The man was arrested shortly after the vehicle was cornered by police.”
She said the man was found in possession of house breaking implements.
“The man is commonly known as the early bird as he often worked alone during housebreakings and was linked to other housebreakings in Garsfontein and other policing precincts.”
She said the matter was still under police investigation.
Jones said police wanted to thank all CPFs and security firms who assisted in arresting the man.
She said these arrests showed the police meant business, especially as the festive season was around the corner.
