Crime is raging unabated in Laudium and Erasmia, west of Pretoria, residents said this week.
Community leader Yusuf Abramjee complained that the matter was getting out of hand.
He reported a rapid rise in the number of robberies and house burglaries in the area, often in broad daylight.
“The community is extremely worried and a lot of people have lost their lives in the area because of the recent robberies in Laudium and Erasmia,” he said.
“Members of the community have died due some of these robberies and we all feel the overall safety of the community at large is very compromised.”
Abramjee berated the police for not doing patrols in the area even after a recent spike in crime.
“The situation is out of control and the police are not doing anything to ensure we are all safe. There are still no patrols,” he said.
“Police visibility is extremely limited and just this week there have been two robberies in the area.”
It appeared as if not much was being done by the police to meet the concerns of residents.
Abramjee said residents had now reported their grievances to community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malonbane.
“We have already made contact with Sizakele Nkosi-Malonbane regarding the situation here,” he said.
“We had to escalate this matter to the provincial and national government because it’s getting out of control, Two weeks ago, there was mob justice where one of the robbers was killed.”
No comment was received from the police at the time of going to print.
