“I’m still afraid of the dark,” says an Elardus Park woman still mourning the death of her fiancé when he responded to a burglary last year.
Erika Cilliers said 10 November marked a year since the death of her fiancé, Bull security official JP van Niekerk.
“Tomorrow [Thursday] marks exactly a year since Bull Security came to my front door to tell me JP didn’t make it.”
Cilliers said it had been an emotional year, but wanted to thank her friends, family, neighbours and Bull security for their goodwill.
“Everyone has been so supportive through this difficult time and I want to say thank you.”
Cilliers said she especially wanted to thank Bull security for their support as they were constantly there when she needed them.
She said strangers offered financial contributions to help her get through the year.
“It’s been a hard year, and some days are better than others, but it’s when it goes quiet in the day that I miss him the most.”
Van Niekerk and his colleague Neil Botha were responding to a burglary in progress at a home in Waterkloof Junction complex, Elardus Park.
“We received a phone call around 01:50 from one of our clients and I called JP for backup,” said Botha.
On arrival, Botha went to the back door and Van Niekerk moved to the front door.
Botha said Van Niekerk died when he was shot by one of the five armed burglars.
Botha said he tried in vain to resuscitate JP before the paramedics arrived.
Van Niekerk was laid to rest at the Te Volle Evangelie Kerk, Lyttelton last year November.
